EDUCATIONAL GUIDE
California Window Tint Laws
A calm, straightforward guide to help Chico drivers understand California window tint rules and feel confident choosing the right film.
Window tint can improve comfort, reduce glare, protect your interior, and block UV exposure. California does have rules about certain windows, and Summit Tint Studio helps customers understand their options before choosing a film.

This page is for general educational purposes only and is not legal advice. California window tint laws can change, and customers are responsible for choosing a tint shade that complies with current law.
The Basics
California Tint Rules in Simple Terms
Front Side Windows
Front side windows have stricter visible light transmission requirements, meaning the film on the driver and front passenger windows must allow a higher percentage of light to pass through.
Rear Side Windows & Rear Windshield
Rear side windows and the rear windshield may allow darker tint when the vehicle has the required side mirrors. This gives drivers flexibility for privacy and heat reduction behind the front seats.
Windshield Tint
Windshield tint is limited, with specific allowances for certain areas and qualifying clear UV-protective film. A sun strip along the top is a common, permitted option.
Medical Exemptions
Medical exemptions may allow qualifying clear, colorless UV-protective film under California rules for customers with documented medical sensitivity to sunlight.
How Visible Light Transmission Works
Visible Light Transmission, or VLT, is the percentage of visible light that passes through your window after the tint is applied. A higher VLT means more light comes through and the film looks lighter. A lower VLT means less light passes through and the film looks darker.
California sets different VLT requirements for different windows. Front side windows generally need to allow more light, while rear windows may be darker. Understanding VLT helps you picture how a shade will look and how it relates to the rules — without needing to memorize the numbers yourself.
When you book with Summit Tint Studio, we walk through your options in plain language so you can choose a shade that matches the look and comfort you want.
Choosing Tint for Comfort and Heat Reduction
Many Chico drivers choose window tint to stay cooler and more comfortable on the road. Heat reduction comes from blocking infrared light, and our ceramic and premium ceramic films reject a significant amount of infrared heat while keeping excellent clarity.
If comfort is your priority, a ceramic film is often a great fit. You get strong heat rejection, reduced glare, and more than 99.9% UV protection without needing the darkest possible shade.
We help you balance heat reduction, appearance, and California's VLT guidelines so you feel good about your choice — whether you want a light, subtle tint or a darker, more private look in the allowed areas.
Legal Tint vs. Privacy Tint
"Legal tint" simply means a shade that meets California's VLT requirements for that window. "Privacy tint" is a darker shade chosen more for appearance and privacy. The two aren't always the same — a very dark shade may be fine on rear windows but not allowed on front side windows.
The good news is you don't have to choose between a great look and a compliant one. Many drivers create a balanced look with a lighter, compliant shade up front and a darker shade on the rear windows and rear windshield where it's permitted.
Summit Tint Studio helps you put together a combination that feels right for your style while keeping the front windows within the guidelines.
Clear Ceramic Film for Heat and UV Protection
If you want heat and UV protection without changing the look of your windows, clear ceramic film is an excellent option. It blocks a high percentage of infrared heat and more than 99.9% of UV rays while remaining virtually invisible.
This can be a great fit for front side windows and windshields where California rules favor higher visible light transmission. You get the comfort and protection benefits of ceramic technology without a dark appearance.
Clear ceramic film is also popular with customers who have medical sensitivity to sunlight, as qualifying clear, colorless UV-protective film may be allowed under California medical exemption rules.
